4 Tips for Getting Rid of Clutter

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

You do all the basic chores—you wash the dishes every day, you take out the garbage, you sweep and vacuum the floors—but your house still seems like a mess.  If that sounds familiar, you may have a clutter problem.

Clutter is all the stuff that builds up on the floors and in the corners of your home.  It’s the stuff that you were too busy to put away, as well as the stuff that you simply don’t know what to do with.

How to De-Clutter

The first step to de-cluttering your home is to start figuring out what you have.  Go from room to room and gather everything that’s out of place (one idea is to put it all in a large laundry basket, or several large laundry baskets.)  Once you’ve done this, start separating the stuff that simply needs to be put away from the stuff that you no longer need.

Once you’ve done that, follow these simple steps to make sure your home doesn’t become overwhelmed with clutter again:

  1. Put things away after you use them.  Making sure that you return things to their proper home after you’re done with them is one of the simplest and quickest ways to make sure that your home doesn’t become overwhelmed with clutter.
  2. Don’t grow attached to objects.  There are things that have genuine value—family photographs, heirlooms, wedding dresses—and then there are things, like the outfit you wore once ten years ago and that you don’t like anymore, that you really don’t need to have around.
  3. Donate the stuff that’s still in good condition but which you don’t need any more.  Simply put, if you’re not going to use it, don’t keep it around the house.
  4. Throw away the things that are worn, damaged, or broken.  You may say, “Well, this printer from 1995 cost a lot of money and I may get around to fixing it someday.”  You probably won’t.  Just throw it away.

Though all the clutter may at first seem overwhelming, you’ll find that things become a lot easier when you have a system for getting rid of the mess.

How To Do Green Cleaning

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

Yes, household cleaning chemicals can lead to environmental problems. To be an environmentally aware consumer, you’ll need information on the best methods to practice green housekeeping in Utah. These practices will not only help the environment, but will also keep your house as clean as can be if used properly.

Green Cleaning Products

From the grocery store

o As environmental awareness increases and companies start taking advantage of the benefits of making green products, more and more green household cleaners are hitting the shelf. Look for labels that say biodegradable, non-toxic, or made with renewable resources.

Do it yourself

o If you prefer not to pay the probable cost for green cleaning products, you can always work with homemade cleaning products that work well too.

  • Combine water with your choice out of vinegar, baking soda, club soda, or undiluted lemon juice for a cleaner that works almost anywhere.
  • Make a disinfectant by combining 2 cups of water, 3 tablespoons of liquid soap, and 20-30 drops of tea tree oil.
  • Use cornmeal to soak up large carpet spills and vacuum it up when it’s done.
  • Keep baking soda on hand to use as a deodorizer.
  • To remove stains from delicate linens, you can soak them in boiling water, set the in the sunlight, or use peroxide.

When it comes to the environment, all precautions should be taken. However, green solutions don’t have to be expensive or difficult, especially for cleaning products.

Four Reasons to Have Your Home Cleaned

Monday, June 6th, 2011

Life gets busy and sometimes it is difficult to find the time to properly clean our homes. However, a clean home is a healthy home and it can literally affect our physical, mental and emotional well-being. Here are four reasons why:

  1. Keep things as germ free as possible: Your toilet bowl, bathtub, showers, sinks, stove, refrigerator counter tops and tables can be breeding grounds for harmful bacteria, germs, viruses, molds and mildew. On average, children will contract 6-12 colds every year. By ensuring that your home receives thorough, regular cleanings you can boost the chances that you and your family will avoid preventable diseases and infections.
  2. Save time: Regular house cleanings will keep your home organized and running smoothly; thereby giving you more time to rest, relax, re-charge your batteries and free up your time for enjoying life’s simple pleasures.
  3. Maximize space in your home: We ought to be able to make use of every square inch of our homes. But dust, clutter, and disorder can make even a large house feel much smaller. A little cleaning will remind you of how big your house was when you bought it!
  4. Improve your psychological comfort: The look of your home can affect your outlook on life. A beautiful clean home make us feel good and it can improve our sense of well-being. Keeping your home clean and tidy is a simple way to improve your outlook on life.

There are, of course, times when we are too busy or when we are otherwise unable to clean our homes. With one quick call to American Housekeeping, your Utah house cleaning services experts, you can immediately improve the quality of your life.

Clean a Carpet Stain in 6 Easy Steps

Monday, June 6th, 2011

Some of life’s moments can induce panic in any homeowner. These can include coming home to an unwelcome gift from your pet, helplessly watching as a glass of grape juice crashes to the carpet, or finding your delightful toddler painting artistically on your living room rug or wall. Stains don’t have to be the end of the world; here’s a simple guide to getting some of them out:

  1. Don’t let the stain sit for a long time.
  2. Quickly use stain remover. The kind you choose will depend on what kind of stain you have on your hands. Nail polish, for example, is best removed with non-acetate polish remover. Some stains, such as bleach stains, can’t be removed, so you will want to try spot-dying instead. You’ll find a variety of stain removers at the supermarket – pick whichever best fits your situation.
  3. Pretest the stain remover in an inconspicuous place.
  4. Scrape off any dried-on material.
  5. Apply a modest amount of stain remover to a clean, white towel. Don’t use hot water– keeping water cool to lukewarm can minimize the damage. In some cases, such as with blood stains, heat will set in the stain, so it’s important to use cool water.
  6. Clean the stain from the outside in.

How to Get Rid of Hard Water Stains

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

No matter how much you scrub, hard water stains can be extremely difficult to remove.  However, it’s not impossible to get rid of that pesky ring around your toilet bowl, or the water stains on your shower door.

All you need is: white paper towels, white vinegar, a spray bottle, towel and to follow these three easy steps:

  1. Soak the white paper towels with the vinegar. Wipe the paper towels over the hard water stains. In order to dissolve stains on flat surfaces let the towels soak on the surface for 25 minutes or more.
  2. Pour the vinegar into a spray bottle and spray over shower doors, head and faucets.   The vinegar should saturate the stains for about 30 minutes.  Once this is done wipe a wet sponge over the surfaces until all the vinegar is gone.
  3. If the hard water stains are still prevalent, repeat this process.  Then dry all surfaces with a towel once the vinegar has been removed.

Note: Hard water stains accumulate on surfaces because of excessive minerals in the water. Magnesium and calcium are the two main minerals associated with hard water and are almost impossible to remove with just soap and water. If vinegar doesn’t do the trick, then purchasing a phosphoric acid from the janitorial supply store should do it.

Prevention is the best medicine

As with anything else, prevention is the best medicine.  A water softener will prevent most hard water stains.  Also, using a squeegee after showering will help a lot.
